The Batman premieres in a week, and buzz continues to grow for Matt Reeve’s dark and gritty take on the DC franchise. A few short extracts and clips continue to make the buzz on the Internet, the latest showing us our first look at The Riddler without the mask by Paul Dano! And while we’ve seen parts of this scene before in the trailers, this clip actually gives us our first full look at the villain’s face.
In the scene, Gotham City PD converges on Edward Nashton, aka the Riddler, at an empty bar. The calculating villain barely reacts, seeming perfectly content to wait to be captured while drawing surprisingly good latte-art in his coffee. Dano perfectly conveys a sense of chilling, quiet confidence throughout the scene, as if he’s been waiting for this moment and letting himself be stopped on purpose. His disturbing presence reminding us of his performance in Dennis Villenueve Prisonerswhere he played an equally disturbed character, and it’s clear that Dano will get a chance to play his acting roles within 3 hours of this movie.

Who is The Riddler in The Batman?
The Riddler in Matt Reeve’s film will be quite different from previous incarnations of the character we’ve seen. First known as Edward Nigma (and later Edward Nashton), the Riddler was created by Bill Finger and Dick Sprang in 1948, debuting in Detective Comics #140, and he quickly became the one of Batman’s most recognizable adversaries. While many of the other villains in Batman’s rogues gallery challenge his strength, the Riddler challenges his wits, creating elaborate puzzles and convoluted death traps for the hero to navigate.

The first time the character appeared in a movie was in 1995 batman forever, where he was played by the incredible Jim Carrey. In this movie, Edward was played in a pulpy, flashy, and unmistakably comedic way…but that’s not what we’re going to get into. The Batman. Instead, Paul Dano’s Riddler will be a shadowy figure who draws inspiration from real-life serial killers such as Zodiac Killer.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Dano explained how playing the role affected his sleep:
“There is a sequence with the character of Peter Sarsgaard [Gotham district attorney Gil Colson]. It was intense. There were nights where I probably didn’t sleep as well as I would have liked just because it was kind of hard to get off of this character. It takes a lot of energy to get there. And so you almost have to maintain it once you’re there because going up and down is kinda hard.
The Riddler will also be very different in this film from what he was in. batman forever. Rather than wearing a flashy green suit covered in question marks, this Riddler looks more like an extremist loner who just received a gift card from an army surplus store. Dano revealed that it was actually his idea to cover his character with plastic wrap, thinking it made sense for a serial killer who didn’t want to leave any DNA evidence behind. Director Matt Reeve liked the idea so much that he fully immersed himself in it.
