The Rise Of Gru dives deep into 70s fashion [EXCLUSIVE CLIP]

Screen Rant is thrilled to bring you an exclusive behind-the-scenes clip celebrating the home release of Minions: The Rise of Gru, which will be available on digital August 30 through Universal Pictures Home Entertainment. Located after 2015 Minions (which in itself was a prequel to Illumination’s Despicable Me movies), the latest film in the franchise follows young Gru (still voiced by Steve Carell) in the 1970s as he becomes entangled with a group of supervillains known as the Vicious 6.

This is where the titular creatures come in Minions: The Rise of Gru, as they are determined to help their “Mini Boss” champion his cause even as he ignores their initial attempts to save his own skin. The story splits its time between the Minions and Gru himself, serving as the perfect bridge between the prequel film and the original trilogy. Despite pandemic delays shifting the film’s release date, it’s proven the resilience of its adorable yellow leads by racking up over $800 million at the global box office so far.

Universal is now ready to bring this success home, with the upcoming digital and physical release of Minions: The Rise of Gru. In Screen RantIn the exclusive clip, the cast and creatives discuss how they handled the film’s ’70s aesthetic. Minions may be timeless after all, but they always do their best to blend in with the time period they occupy. Director Kyle Balda, along with co-directors Jonathan Del Val and Brad Ableson, discuss which iconic fashion pieces were most in their minds when it came to character design. Check out the full clip below:

Carell adds her own personal memories of ’70s fashion and hairstyles, which were certainly incorporated into Gru’s looks in the film. The Vicious 6 also had plenty of period-compatible flair, and the production team had a good laugh as they reviewed what was fashionable then versus what’s fallen out of fashion now. But just like the Minions themselves, the 70s always comes back to being cool.
