JoAnne Artman Gallery presents: YIPPEE-KI-YAY !!

There is nothing like the good old westerns! JoAnne Artman Gallery is proud to present Yippee ki yay, an exclusive exhibition featuring works by Billy Schenck, Greg Miller and America Martin. Entitled after the joyful expression of 19th century cowboys, Yippee ki yay captures the harshness, independence and adventure of the Wild West. Continuing the legacy of American Frontier’s popularity in art, film, and literature, each artist independently explores this story through a personal narrative and the familiar imagery of archetypal heroes.

Billy Schenck’s oil on canvas depictions of the American West establish visual links between film and art history. Striking contrasts, the use of patterns, vivid hues and a pop sensibility imbue the work with a contemporary twist that confronts some of Hollywood’s most popular tropes. Motifs common in Schenck’s work include heroes, villains, the alluring femme fatale, and Native American figures. Acquiring his imagery from both personal references and historical sources, Schenck links his personal accounts to those that came before him.

GREG MILLER Time Acrylic, Collage, Gloss varnish on panel 48 x 48 inches

Greg Miller’s mixed media approach unifies Pop Art, collage and the concept of collective memory. Using collected ephemeral papers, Miller draws inspiration from his Californian urban roots to create tangible, evocative visual narratives through his compositions. Often using period texts, illustrations, newspapers and photographs as a basis, Miller complements the works with elements of typography, resulting in visual landscapes of great narrative depth. Miller’s unique Americana brand celebrates and marks our connection with iconic imagery that transcends the passage of time.

LA-based artist America Martin draws inspiration from his Colombian heritage and the natural world. Recognized for her unique use of the line and her portrayal of form through mediums, Martin often treats figure and background with equal importance. Luscious and generous brush strokes, thick layers of paint and a bold use of line are iconic of her style. Returning to his series of Native American portraits, Martin’s expertise in the human form gives solid representations, anchored and in harmony with the environment.
