Howells-Dodge junior wins Nebraska Young Artist Award | Education

Howells-Dodge High School student Sophia Dvorak of Dodge won a Nebraska Young Artist Award from the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

The annual awards recognize Nebraska 11th graders for their talents in visual arts, dance, music, theater, film and emerging media arts. Dvorak’s specialty is visual arts.

Fifty-seven students from more than 30 high schools across the state were selected as winners.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the day of activities originally scheduled for April 6 has been postponed and spaced out. Students and families will join Hixson-Lied College faculty and students on campus in small groups between March 25 and April 6. Visiting students will tour the art facility, participate in a workshop with Husker faculty, and observe current Husker students at work.

Students applied for recognition and submitted an example of their work. Applications were received from 116 students. Hixson-Lied College professors chose the winners.

Winners were also asked to name the teacher who provided them with the most mentorship and support in developing their particular talents.

Students will receive a certificate and an original artwork commissioned for the event and created by a printmaking student from the School of Art, Art History and Design.
