ARCAthens Inaugural Curatorial Fellow co-organizes the 7th Athens Biennale ECLIPSE | archives, culture and arts, events

ATHENS – ARCAthens announced by email that the first curatorial member of their Athens residency, Larry Ossei-Mensah, is co-organizing the 7th Athens Biennial ECLIPSE with Omsk Social Club, under the artistic direction of Poka-Yio. The exhibition opens on September 24 and features artists based in North and South America, the Caribbean, Africa and Europe, many of whom will be exhibiting in Greece for the first time.

During his residency at ARCAthens, Larry Ossei-Mensah was introduced to the Athenian community in depth. The ARCAthens seminars at the Athens School of Fine Arts (ASFA), organized with the Poka-Yio lab, allowed Larry and Poka to share ideas and start a creative collaboration.

Ossei-Mensah said of his residency in Athens: “ARCAthens has really been a game-changer for me personally and professionally. I see this experience as another pivot that reshaped my way of thinking about art, my curatorial practice and my view of the world. I came to Athens via this residency with the intention of learning more about the city and its artistic community, but ended up leaving with more. I have developed a new network of friends and colleagues within the Athenian art ecosystem with whom I look forward to continuing a deep and in-depth dialogue. I leave this residency with a renewed focus and urgency that will be a key catalyst that will direct the next chapter of my curatorial practice. I thank the ARCAthens team and board for building such a strong and thoughtful program for myself and Cullen. [Washington, J., Visual Art Fellow]. I have been changed forever!

ARCAthens Visual Art Fellow (Athens Residency Fall 2019) Tomashi Jackson will also participate in the 7th Athens Biennale with three videos. According to the 7th Athens Biennale website, “Inspired by her education in Los Angeles and a recent residency in Athens with ARCAthens, Jackson filmed original music videos to classic R&B songs.”

“During a recent residency in Athens, Jackson took an interest in Greece as the cradle of democracy, retracing how the right to vote has slowly and often painfully spread through time and geography,” reported the Los Angeles Times.

“In a way, our residences are ‘intercultural seed planters’, where the fertile and supportive environment provided by ARCAthens could encourage dialogue, growth and development,” said ARCAthens Executive Director Aristides Logothetis. “In this model, IMPACT is almost impossible to predict – you can’t tell when the planted seed might germinate – so we are delighted to witness the rapid flowering of the creative seed planted during our inaugural co-curation residency. by Larry from the 7th Athens Biennale!

“We wish Larry, his co-curators Omsk Social Club, the artists and the entire Athens Biennale team an inspired exhibition,” concluded Logothetis.
